World book day at OPA 2017
This year’s world book day saw the installation of a Pop-up Library in our heart space which was well used by students and staff alike. The library was run by year 7 students with each tutor group responsible for a day each. The Pop-Up Library has been so successful that we are keeping it open until Easter while the main library area is being re-catalogued for an exciting new reading programme called Accelerated Reader.
On world book day Thursday 2nd March all lessons began with a drop everything and read mini session. Students and staff spent time reading and discussing a range of texts including winning entries from Radio 2’s 500 words competition and non-fiction articles relating to current affairs. Each lesson the students got to choose from nine different texts.
World book Quiz
Most tutor groups took part in a world book day quiz. The bumper book quiz provided by worldbookday.com included video clips from well-known authors including Malorie Blackman, Charlie Higson and Cressida Cowell, picture rounds and a round about fictional families. The quiz was extremely tricky and most of our students soon realised they needed to get reading!
All academy students including 6th form received a World Book Day book token to spend on a book of their choice or to redeem for one of the specialist books produced for World book Day which only cost a pound. Vouchers were well received by students with some students reporting they had bought several books over the weekend.
Although there was no set theme at OPA this year the English team decided to bring World Book Day to life in their own special way. They each chose characters from Charlie and the chocolate factory and dressed up as them. They were spotted all over the academy that day. It is rumoured that the Science team had Winnie the Pooh supporting them throughout the day also!
What I’m Reading
As part of the celebrations staff were invited to submit a ‘what I’m reading’ poster for display to encourage and inspire our students to read. Please keep a look out for these around the academy building.
