Dear Parents and Carers,
I wanted to write to you today to let you know of some excellent news – as you may have been aware, our Academy was recently inspected by Ofsted, and today we have been rated as ‘Good’.
We are all very proud of this achievement, and it underlines the journey of improvement that our school has been on in recent years. It has been a real team effort – I firmly believe that effective and sustained improvement can only be achieved if it is supported by everyone associated with a school. I am therefore enormously grateful to have such a wonderful teaching and staff team, supportive governors, an involved sponsor (Ormiston Academies Trust), and most important of all, parents and students who are committed to Ormiston Park and its success. Thank you.
I strongly believe that every student can and should achieve well. To deliver this ambition, we have sought to ensure that every young person at Ormiston Park has the support they need to thrive, and this was recognised by Ofsted as a key factor in the improvement that the school has achieved.
The report, which is available to view online www.ormistonpark.org.uk/ofsted , praises the Academy for its rapid, sustainable improvement and highlights the following strengths:
- Good quality teaching, with students well supported and teachers ensuring that they are motivated and challenged to do well.
- The success of our ‘Believe and Achieve’ ethos, which is inspiring students to succeed.
- Our strong science department, recently awarded a ‘gold standard award’ by OAT.
- High standards in English provision, which are delivering very good outcomes for students.
- The personal development and wellbeing of students is a priority for the Academy and your children feel safe and know who to go to when they have any anxieties or concerns.
- Pupil premium and additional catch-up funding is targeted effectively and the Academy’s whole-school literacy strategy ensures that students catch up quickly.
- Our students have a positive attitude, demonstrate increasing confidence and take pride in their learning.
- Governors are well-informed and work closely with the Trust to support and challenge the school leaders effectively. They are ambitious for the school and its future.
- We are making good use of the support available from external schools and partners through our sponsor, OAT.
Today’s rating is a real boost, but we will not rest on our laurels, and are already looking to build on this success. I am confident that with the dedication and expertise of our staff, the continuing hard work of our students, your ongoing support and commitment, and the wider support of Ormiston Academies Trust, Ormiston Park Academy will go from strength to strength.
I am always grateful for your contributions on how we can continue to improve our Academy, and so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss this further.
2017/18 October half -term Consultation and holiday dates
Following consideration of the responses to our recent consultation the Governors have agreed to trial an extended October half term for the 2017/18 Academic year. For this year only in the first instance the half term break will now be of two weeks duration (Monday 23rd October to Friday 3rd November 2017).
In order that the overall learning time for students remains the same the Academy is adopting an extended Monday for the full year, which will now finish at 3:30pm every week. Other days will continue to finish at 2:50pm.
Governors have also agreed the dates for 4 of the 5 INSET days for 2017/18:
Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th September 2017
Wednesday 20th December 2017
Tuesday 2nd January 2018
For the full holiday dates for 2017/18 please refer to the Term Dates section of our Information page.
Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics
OPA STEM won another Lego robotics competition prize yesterday at Queen Mary’s London University. They took the prize for the best robot design and came overall third in the competition. We were told that it was touch and go all day for the top three teams with at one point only two points between first and third place.
OPA awarded the Diversity Mark
Following a full exploration of the work we are doing in our CPRE and wider curriculum I am proud to announce that Ormiston Park Academy has been awarded the Diversity Mark. The citation reads:
‘In recognition of the commitment by the school leadership team to preventing extremism and achieving excellence in the spiritual, moral, social and cultural education of all students, whilst striving for equality of educational outcomes and a focus on a global educational perspective, that enables students to respect difference and value diversity.’
West Ham United Foundation Football Development Programme
I am extremely pleased to announce two exciting collaborations with West Ham United.
As you will see from banners above we are introducing a Football Academy for both men and ladies aged 16-18 in September 2017 . This will afford students access to a top quality football development programme within the framework of our existing Sixth Form provision. The opportunities working in partnership with a premiership Club are obvious and include potentially progressing to study for an Applied Community Sport Degree at the University of East London.
In addition, we are now operating as their Community Sports Hub School in Thurrock. This joint venture will see two full time Community Hub Officers working in the Academy throughout the year. In term time they will be supporting student progress in academic subjects during the day, running an extensive programme of sporting enrichment activities/coaching programmes after school, and in the evenings and weekends promoting the community use of our fantastic facilities. During the holiday periods they will be running a varied programme of community sports activities for people of all ages and abilities.
