On Thursday 7th March, Science teachers Miss Chan and Mr Thorne visited Aveley Primary to deliver our weekly afterschool Science club. This week we were making ice cream from milkshake using only ice, salt and science! Thank you to our year 7 students who supported the session and Patsy Martin, one of our science technicians, for sorting all the materials needed.
As part of British Science Week 2019, year 8 and 10 students will have the opportunity to speak in a live chat with real scientists and engineers. Year 8 students will be speaking with engineers in the Space Zone and year 10 students will be speaking with scientists in the Drug Discovery Zone. On Thursday 28th February, OPA Science teacher, Miss Ryan and one of our amazing Science technicians, Patsy Martin, visited OPA Primary School to deliver a food testing practical. The students in Years 3 - 6 from the primary school tested different foods to find out if they contain starch, sugars, protein and fats. Some of our wonderful Science Ambassadors supported this week's session.
This term 12 higher-attaining students in years 9 and 10 have been specially selected to take part in The Scholars Programme delivered by the Brilliant Club, to encourage students to aim higher and increase their aspirations. The programme involves mobilising the PhD community to share its academic expertise with state schools. It places doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in schools to deliver university-style tutorials, supplemented by two trips to highly selective universities in the UK. After school on Thursday, Mr Gold and Mrs Jemedze visited Aveley primary school along with three super Science Ambassadors from Yr 7. This week, the students investigated circuits and found out how series and parallel circuits affect the brightness of the bulbs. We look forward to next week when the students will be investigating Acids and Alkalis with Mrs Thacker and Ms Ryan.

On Thursday 24th January, the first session for the KS2-3 OPA Science Club at Aveley Primary School took place. The Science club is delivered in collaboration by Mr Sisterson, the Aveley Primary Science Lead teacher, and the OPA Science team. For the very first session of the new afterschool club, which will run every Thursday at 3:10 – 4pm, the students were able to investigate animal and plant cells under the microscopes. Ormiston Park Academy Hosts Special Event for Year 8 Girls Ormiston Park Academy, in Aveley, were delighted to join up with the West Ham Foundation in December to host an exciting event highlighting the importance of positive female role models. All girls in Year 8 at the academy, which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), gathered for a female-only session focused on student wellbeing as well as individual goals and aspirations. Year 5 and 6 students at Aveley Primary School had lots of fun taking part in science practicals on Wednesday 12th December. Ms Thacker and Ms Ryan from OPA Science department ran the practical sessions at Aveley Primary school, which involved the Year 5 pupils carefully carrying out the exciting chemistry practical "Hydrogen Pop Tests".
