About the Academy 2018-11-27T08:48:23+00:00

Ormiston Park officially opened as an 11-19 mixed Academy in September 2009, replacing its predecessor school the Belhus Chase Specialist Humanities College. It is sponsored by the Ormiston Academies Trust and students and staff moved into their new £16.4 million building in November 2013.

The Academy holds both Healthy School and International School status. It has been granted a British Council Platinum award for its work in Connecting Classrooms and in January 2017 was awarded the prestigious Diversity Mark. It has attained the AfPE quality mark with Distinction, Investors in People status and, more recently, has been accredited as a Microsoft Office Specialist Academy and Centre of Excellence.

Following three years as a Student Engagement Trust demonstration site the student body continue to positively influence and shape Academy culture and, as part of the Thurrock Teaching School Alliance, academy staff continue to engage in developing and sharing the best practice in teaching and learning.

The Academy has a small  but growing Sixth Form and offers both a range of level 3 vocational courses and A levels alongside work experience, leisure and recreation opportunities and supported individual study. In addition, students can access a wide range of courses made available through a strategic partnership with South Essex College. In September 2018 the Academy is launching a 16-19 Football Development programme for both men and ladies in collaboration with premiership club West Ham United.

As part of the Government’s Cadet Expansion Programme the Academy has established a Combined Cadet Force (Army Section) and in partnership with Thurrock LA our students are now also able to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Both these opportunities afford outstanding leadership and teamwork experiences.

Supported by its sponsor and the Local Authority the Academy also provides for students with very severe behavioural, emotional and social difficulties in A Specialist Centre for Education, Nurture and Development (ASCEND). This resource base accommodates 20 students whose engagement in all the various provisions of other establishments in the area has completely broken down.

Letter from the Principal re retirement

November 6th, 2019|

Dear Parent/Carer,

I firstly want to welcome you and your child back to the academy after what I hope has been a restful and enjoyable half term break.

I also wanted to write to you today to inform you that I have made the decision to retire at the end of the academic year, having proudly served as Principal of Ormiston Park Academy for many years.

I first joined the school – which was then Aveley Secondary School, before later becoming Belhus Chase Specialist Humanities College – as Deputy Headteacher in 2004. During my fifteen years here, it has been both a pleasure and a privilege to support the many children and young people who have come through our school doors.

It is with great sadness that I will be leaving the academy, but I am so proud of how far we have come and of all the great milestones and achievements that we have reached together. Building Ormiston Park Academy to be the positive, proud and prosperous learning environment it is today has been a huge team effort, and some of my greatest career highlights have been at our academy.

There are so many things I am proud of, including leading our successful transition to become Ormiston Park Academy and join the Ormiston Academies Trust family in 2009 – a move which continues to significantly benefit our students, staff and wider school community. Additionally, designing and officially opening our state-of-the-art new building in 2013 which has given our students the opportunity to learn and develop in an inspiring and high-quality learning environment. And finally, achieving our Good Ofsted rating in 2017, with inspectors praising the high expectations and culture that we have all created – giving our students the very best possible chance to succeed.

The positive and upward journey of the academy, however, would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the parent body, and the collective hard work of the students, senior leadership team, staff, Board of Governors and our sponsor, OAT. I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to you all, as Ormiston Park Academy would not be the school it is today without you all.

As the academy continues on its successful journey, we are launching a recruitment process to appoint a high calibre Principal whose vision and passion will match our high expectations for the academy and your children.

Once appointed, I will be working closely, alongside our Board and the Trust, to support the transition of the new Principal, who will be starting in the new 2020/21 academic year.

We will keep you updated on the recruitment process, and in the meantime, I would like to thank you once again for your continued support over the years. It has truly been a pleasure to be the Principal of the academy, working alongside such talented children and staff, and I will continue to follow Ormiston Park Academy journey closely in the years to come.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Huw Derrick

Principal
