Reading at Ormiston Park Academy
We are excited to be embarking on a new project with the Accelerated Reader Programme and the implementation of a new academy library resource area.
‘Accelerated Reader gives teachers the information they need to monitor students’ reading practice and make informed decisions to guide their future learning.
A comprehensive set of reports reveals how much a student has been reading, at what level of complexity, and how well they have understood what they have read. Vocabulary growth and literacy skills are also measured, giving teachers insight into how well students have responded to reading schemes and class instruction.’- taken from http://www.renlearn.co.uk/accelerated-reader/
All key stage 3 students have completed a reading assessment which will indicate their reading levels and enable them to choose appropriate texts from our growing library.
All key stage 3 students will have designated library access during their weekly Literacy lesson.
Accelerated reader quizzes will also be available online at home to encourage reading at home.
Supporting weaker readers
For our weakest readers a ‘Paired reading’ programme will operate which will utilise a short period of time daily for 121 or small group reading. We also operate the Lexia programme for weaker readers and our students learning English as an additional language.
World Book Day
As an academy we annually celebrate World book Day which this year included Drop Everything and Read for all year groups in all lessons. We encourage our students to read a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction texts.
Year 7 Literacy day
In December we held a literacy day for year 7 which included activities from the national literacy trust, a visiting storyteller and a session with a published author.
